Just like anything humans do in life, with a label such as ‘vegetarian’, ridiculous myths and rumors sneak along with it.
Myth-All vegetarians are healthy and slim
Reality- Just like any type of diet, whether it be meat or plant based, humans have the chance of gaining or losing weight. Becoming a vegetarian does NOT necessarily mean you are going to lose weight. In fact, it could mean quite the opposite. Without proper research or motivation a vegetarian diet can become just as unhealthy, if not unhealthier than prior eating habits. Some people choose to replace their meat intake with more than sufficient amounts of junk food rather than snacking on a few healthier choices such as fruits and vegetables. So to sum it up- being labelled as a vegetarian does not automatically make you healthy, nor does it make you slim. Just like any diet it takes time and practice!
Myth-All vegetarians want to brainwash you into becoming ‘one of them’
Reality- I can’t even stress how false this statement is. First of all, categorizing a large group of people and saying that they’re all the same is an extremely unfair judgement. We, as humans, are all different. Each and every one of us become a vegetarian for different reasons, and there are indeed some people who will want to push their morals and their beliefs on vegetarianism right down your throat. But- and this is very important- we do not all do that! No different than meat eaters who choose NOT to interrogate vegetarians. See where I’m going with this?
Myth- Vegetarians live off of leaves and tofu (AKA-“their food has no taste”)
Reality- This one is probably the most common statements I hear about vegetarians, and it makes me giggle every time. First of all, their is a HUGE variety of vegetarians that do not incorporate tofu in their diet at all. Some don’t like the taste of it, others just don’t feel it’s a necessity. Second of all, becoming a vegetarian was by far the best thing I have ever done for my taste-buds. As a girl who loves to cook, cooking vegetarian dishes has opened up an entire new world to my culinary cravings. It has given me the opportunity to conquer new challenges, indulge in new treats, and even fix old favorite recipes. And to be completely honest with you, salad has probably been one of my least frequent dishes since becoming a vegetarian ;) I mean it when I say this, vegetarian or not- don’t knock it til’ you try it!
We all know there is a million more myths involving vegetarians but these three definitely stick out most in my mind. I would LOVE to hear your ‘favorite’ vegetarian myth’s- send me a message in my ask telling me your goofy vegetarian stories :)
